Abstract

Aim: Magnessium (Mg) treatment has long been considered as a golden standart in management of gestational hypertension and termination of uterine preterm contractions during gestational period but Mg prophylaxis in pregnant women is an inchoate point that needs to be clarified in many aspects. In this study, the effect of Mg given prophylactically to pregnant women was investigated in terms of arterial pressure, atrial and ventricular ectopic beats in comparison with control group. Material and Method: Patients were grouped into a "prophylaxis group" (n=50)-those receiving Mg prophylaxis, and a "control group" (n=50)-those to whom no Mg prophylaxis was given. Patients having hypertension and a chronic disease were not included into the study. Prophylactic Mg therapy was started to the patients from the "prophylactic group" not later than their 10th week of pregnancy. A Holter monitoring was performed prior to the Mg prophylaxis (basic record) and at the 30th week of pregnancy (second comparative record). The same Holter monitoring timing was applied to the "control group" patients. Results: The Holter monitoring analysis of the "control group" revealed a basic mean ectopic atrial beat (EAB) number of 14.7±12.5 and a comparative mean ectopic atrial beat (EAB) number of 19.0±17.5. The increase in the EAB number was found to be statistically significant (p<0.01). The increase in the number of the premature ventricular contractions (PVC) was statistically insignificant (p>0.05) and all of them were monomorphic. The patients having polymorphic PVC's and a chronic condition (s) were not included into the study in order to achieve homogenization of the groups. There was no statistically significant blood pressure difference between the groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: Mg prophylaxis may aid in suppression of gestationally triggered supraventricular arrhythmias but widespread approval of prophylaxis requires further investigations.
