Abstract

Aim: Oxidant and antioxidant parameters are important in various heart diseases. In the etiopathogenesis of cardiomyopathies (KMP), it had been shown increased oxidant substances and reduced various antioxidant substances and enzymes. The aim of our study is to determine total antioxidant capacity (TAK), total oxidant capacity (TOK), oxidative stress index (OSI) and serum catalase activities among patients with idiopathic and ischemic KMP and healthy volunteers. Material and Method: Patients with low ejection fraction and larger left ventricle on echocardiography were divided two groups according to the presence of ischemic heart disease as ischemic (Group 1, n=21) and idiopathic KMP (Group 2, n=21). Twenty-five healthy volunteers were identified as control group (Group 3). Anthropometric and biochemical data of all individuals, presence of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, drug and smoking history were recorded. TAK and TOK values were measured by Erel’s methods and serum catalase activity by Goth's calorimetric method in the previously collected and stored serum samples. TOK / TAK ratio was considered as OSI. Results: Anthropometric and biochemical parameters, statin use was not different among the groups. Acetylsalicylic acid, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, and beta-blocker use had significant difference among the groups (p<0.05). Echocardiographic parameters were similar between Groups 1 and 2 but both groups were significantly different than group 3 (p<0.05). TAK, TOK and OSI were not significantly different among the groups. Catalase activity was not significantly different between groups 1 and 2 (p>0.05), but it was statistically significantly different in both KMP groups than in group 3 (p<0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study showed that TAK and TOK has not changed significantly but serum catalase activity is significantly decreased in the ischemic and idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy compared to controls.
