Abstract

Aim: Association of metabolic syndrome (MetS) with atherosclerosis and its predictive value in cardiovascular events has been demonstrated. In this study we aimed to demonstrate diastolic dysfunction in patients with MetS and with no clinical coronary artery disease using tissue Doppler echocardiography. Material and Methods: Thirty patients with MetS (7 men, mean age 67 ± 8 yrs) and 30 age and sexmatched control subjects (6 men, mean age 64 ± 8 yrs) were studied. Patients with coronary artery disease were excluded from the study. All patients underwent 2-dimensional, m-mode, Doppler and tissue Doppler echocardiography from lateral and septal mitral annulus. Results: Groups were similar regarding ejection fractions and systolic tissue Doppler velocities. There were no difference with respect to transmitral E wave between the groups, however, A wave velocity was significantly higher and E/A ratio was significantly lower inMetS patients. Early diastolic wave velocity obtained from lateral and septal mitral annulus and the mean value calculated from these two parameters were significantly lower in patients with MetS than controls (11.6 ± 2.8 vs 14.2 ± 2.5, p=0.001, 11.8 ± 2.1 vs 13.6 ± 2.5, p=0.01, 11.8 ± 2.2 vs 14.0 ± 2.0, p<0.001, respectively). Conclusion: Left ventricular diastolic function is impaired in patients with MetS and without coronary artery disease when compared with those who do not have MetS.
