Abstract

Aim: Although epicardial adipose tissue(EAT) has been shown to have active inflammatory function and is associated with coronary atherosclerosis. Aortic valve sclerosis (AVS) is characterized with progressive thickening of aortic valves without causing significant narrowing and is associated with coronary artery disease. Mitral annular calcification (MAC) is defined as chronic calcific degeneration of the fibrous skeleton of mitral valve supporting valve tissue. We aimed to investigate association of EAT, AVS, and MAC with coronary atherosclerosis and whether this association would predict the severity and extent of coronary artery disease. Material and Method: 140 consecutive patients, who underwent coronary angiography in our cardiology department between May and November 2008 were included into the study. Subjects were divided into 2 groups according to Gensini score which depicts coronary artery lesion severity. Those with Gensini score higher than 20 formed one group (102 patients, 27 female, 75 male, mean age; 60.5±11.1), and those with Gensini score less than 20 formed the control group (38 subjects, 19 female, 19 male, mean age; 56.1±13.1). Results: EAT thickness was higher in the patients group when compared with the control group (7.9±3.7 mm, vs 6.2 ±2.8 mm p=0.007). AVS was more common in the patients group (60.8% vs 34.2% p=0.005), whereas there was no difference in terms of MAC between groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: Association of epicardial adipose tissue thickness and aortic valve sclerosis with coronary artery disease shows that these parameters might be useful to assess the severity and extent of coronary artery disease.
