Abstract

Takotsubo syndrome, also known stress-induced cardiomyopathy and broken heart syndrome, is diagnosed by transient left ventricular dysfunction in the absence of obstructive coronary artery disease. It was first described in 1990 in Japan. It is the hallmark bulging out of the apex of the heart with preserved function of the base that gives the syndrome its name "tako-tsubo", or octopus pot in Japan. It is usually triggered with stress and seen in post menopausal woman. We report a 81 year old woman who has an emotional stress by her husband’s death and diagnosed as takotsubo syndrome that mimics acute coronary syndrome in this case.
