Abstract

Aim: In many sports, regular training causes characteristic alterations in cardiac function and morphology. There is scarce data about the effect of body building on cardiac function. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of body building sport on cardiac function, oxidative stress and antioxidant activity. Material and Method: This study included 25 men performing body building exercises regularly for 3 months or more (study group), and 27 healthy men with a sedantary life (control group). All individuals were performed tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) in addition to standart transthoracic echocardiography. Furthermore, parameters of antioxidant system activity including activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and gluthathion peroxidase (GPx), and malondialdehyde acid (MDA) levels were measured and com- pared between groups. Results: Among the parameters of standart echocardiography, left ventricular end diastolic diameter, thickness of posterior wall, dia- meter of right ventricle, thickness of right ventricular wall and E/A ratio were significantly increased in study group, mitral A wave and E wave deceleration time was decreased. Among TDI parameters, septal Em, septal Em/Am, lateral Em, lateral Em/Am and an- terior Em/AM was significantly increased in body builders, while lateral Am and anterior Am was significantly increased. CAT (34.9%), GPx (24.8%) and SOD (115%) were significantly increased, MDA activity (29.6%) was significantly decreased in study group as compared to control group. Conclusion: Body building sport leads to mild eccentric dilatation in left ventricle, improvement in left ventricular diastolic function, increase in antioxidant capasity, and decrease in oxidative stres.
