Abstract

Spinal cord injury is an important individual and social problem together with its physical, psychosocial and economical problems. Multiple organs and systems are affected in spinal cord injury. So, both the life quality and the life span of the patients are decreased. İt may also cause immobilisation and sedentary life style in early ages. Cardiovascular system diseases constitute important cause of mortality in these individuals. Several complications related with the cardiovascular system may appear in the acute and /or chronic stage of the spinal cord injury. Cardiac arrhytmias and orthostatic hypotension are important problems that are seen in the acute stage of the disease. Especially in the patients with high-level spinal cord injury, as a result of decrease in the symphatic nerve system activity and related unability of suppression parasymphatic nerve system; some abnormalities in cardiac rhythm such as bradycardia, atrioventricular block may occur. In chronic stage, especially ischemic cardiac diseases cause important problems. Together with classical risk factors such as dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, obesity, smoking; the changes in the body compansation due to sedentary life style related with immobilisation contribute in occurance of cardiovascular system diseases in the patients with spinal cord injury. Therefore, the impairment in the otonomic cardiovascular control mechanisms increases the disease risk. In this article, informations about the cardiovascular system diseases in the patients with spinal cord injury are presented.
