Abstract

Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of tachyarrhythmias in mild mitral stenosis patients with sinus rhythm. Material and Method: We included 63 (7 male, 56 female, mean age: 40.2 ± 10.0 years) mild mitral stenosis patients with sinus rhythm. The patients had moderate and severe valve diseases, mitral balloon valvuloplasty and valve surgery excluded. M-Mode, 2- Dimensional and Doppler echocardiographic examination and 24 hours Holter monitorization were performed to the patients and evaluated by two investigators. Results: The mean left atrial dimension, mitral valve area and echocardiographic valve score were 47.4 ± 4.2 mm, 1.67±0.38 cm2 and 7.7 ± 1.4, respectively. Sixty-two (89.8%) patients had supraventricular premature complexes and 25 (%39.7) had supraventricular tachyarrhythmia. Six (8.6%) patients had paroxysmal atrial tachycardia and 4 (5.7%) patients had multifocal atrial tachycardia. Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation was seen in 23 (33.3%) patients and total episodes were 118. The duration of paroxysmal tachyarrhythmia was between 5.1±7.0 second and 38% of paroxysmal tachyarrhythmia episodes were asymptomatic. While increased AF frequency observed by the Holter monitorization in the patients with increased left atrial diameter (p=0.045), again increased premature atrial beats were also observed in patients with increased left atrial diameter (p=0.006). Conclusion: In this study brings about mild mitral stenotic patients with sinus rhythm are more prone to increased frequency of tachyarrhythmia. Most of the episodes are short lasting and asymptomatic while increased frequency is related with mitral valve area and left atrial diameter.
