Abstract

Objective: Since the table of metabolic diseases includes proatherogenic and inflammatory conditions, it is a potential risk factor for many cardiovascular diseases, such as coronary artery disease. The fibrinogen‐albumin ratio is a new inflammatory index associated with atherosclerosis. In this sense, we aimed to investigate the relationship between the severity of coronary artery disease and fibrinogen/albumin ratio in patients diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. Material and Method: Retrospective data from 167 patients diagnosed with metabolic syndrome according to National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel‐III criteria and 86 patients with stable coronary disease were included in the study. Syntax score was used to evaluate the severity of coronary atherosclerosis angiographically. The value obtained by dividing the blood parameters by fibrinogen/albumin value was compared with the Syntax score divided into 3 groups. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the risk factors of coronary artery disease. Ordinal logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between fibrinogen/albumin ratio and lesion severity of coronary arteries. Results: Coronary artery disease was detected in 86 of 167 patients diagnosed with metabolic syndrome (age 63.32±11.02 years, 69% men). The fibrinogen/albumin ratio was higher in the group with coronary artery disease than in the control group (med 116.21± 38.69 to med 76.97±53.82, p<0.001). We determined that the fibrinogen/albumin ratio is a risk factor independent of other risk factors in the presence of coronary artery disease and shows a positive correlation with the severity of coronary lesions (OR=3.42, %95 CI=1.31‐9.28, r=0.423, p<0.001). Conclusion: The fibrinogen/albumin ratio, an inexpensive and easily measurable laboratory variable, can be considered as a noninvasive indicator of high syntax scores in coronary artery disease developing in patients with metabolic syndrome.
