Abstract

ABO blood groups are composed of complex carbohydrate molecules with different antigenic structures. Coronary artery disease is observed in different rates between ABO blood groups and it is a known fact that atherosclerosis is more common in blood groups other than O blood group. Studies have shown that myocardial infarction, peripheral vascular disease, venous thromboembolism and mortality rates are higher in patients without O group. A better understanding of glycoprotein modification and their potential effects on platelet function and thrombosis may affect future diagnosis and treatment targets in acute coronary syndrome and coronary artery disease. Our aim is to review the consistent relationship between ABO blood groups and cronary artery disease in the light of the data obtained from recent studies and to bring to the literature.
