Abstract

Objective: Despite the great progression in the medical and invasive treatment of atrial fibrillation in recent years, the risk of stroke is still a major threat. There are patients with stroke despite low CHA2DS2VASc scores and consequently giving rise to the possibility of additional risk factors. There are some studies indicating that mean platelet volume determines the prognosis and risk in patients with a stroke. In this study, our aim was to investigate the mean platelet volume levels which may be used as an early predictor of thromboembolism in acute stroke patients with atrial fibrillation. Material and Method: This retrospective crossectional study was conducted between September 2017 and March 2019 using the emergency department and stroke center. Mean platelet volume determination was made within 24 hour following the onset of stroke. The left atrial volume index was categorized as normal ( 9.18 fl) was significantly associated with the occurrence of stroke [odds ratio 4,066, 95% confidence interval 2.292-7.216, p<0.001]. In receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, the value for mean platelet volume levels to detect stroke with a sensitivity of 72% and specificity of 60% was 9.18 fl. Conclusion: Our study showed that high mean platelet volume levels are associated with an increased risk of stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation. In addition, high left atrial volume index values may determine the risk of stroke and may be a marker of decision for anticoagulant therapy as mean platelet volume.
