Abstract

Objective: Use of anterior segment Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) for the evaluation of tear meniscus parameters in premenopausal and postmenopausal healthy women and assessment of the results obtained by comparing these findings. Material and Method: In the study, 33 eyes of 33 healthy women between the ages 35- 45 (Group 1) and 16 eyes of 16 healthy women in postmenopausal period (Group 2) between the ages 50-56 were included. Tear meniscus values measured by OCT were compared. No topical medicine or oral medicine affecting menstrual cycle were used during follow-up. Patients' TMH (tear meniscus height), TMD (tear meniscus depth) and TMA (tear meniscus area) values were measured by OCT on the 1st day of the menstrual cycle and on the 1st days of the following 4 weeks. Result: No significant differences (p=0.24) were observed statistically between the groups in TMH and TMA values measured according to weeks. In analysis within the groups, TMA, TMH and TMD values showed a decrease in the 2nd week and an increase in the 4th week in Group 1, but no statistically significant differences were found (p=0.2). When TMD values measured according to weeks were compared in analysis between groups, no statistically significant differences were found. However, TMD values increasing in the 4th week were found to be significantly high statistically in Group 1 (p=0.033). (tmd1=0.6±2.51, tmd2= -2.4± 4.6). Conclusion: Our study shows that tear meniscus values decrease in follicular phase and increase in luteal phase parallel to the menstrual cycle. Moreover, it supports the fact that this effect can be observed by OCT.
