Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness and reliability of phacoemulsification and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation treatment in patients with complicated cataract secondary to uveitis in Istanbul Education and Research Hospital, Ophthalmology Clinic, Uvea Department between 2000-2010. Material and Methods: Eighty two eyes of 58 patients were evaluated retrospectively. Twenty three patients (%40) were female, and 35 (% 60) were male. Mean age was 48.7±11.8 (22-74 years). Average of preoperative follow-up period was 110±61.9 (12-216 months), while postoperative was 39.1±22.7 months (6-96 months). Preoperative and postoperative inflammation states, postoperative recurrence within the first 6 months, postoperative 6th month and the final best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation, perioperative and postoperative complications were evaluated in all patients . Results: Preoperative mean BCVA was 0.8±0.8 (2.0-0.3) log MAR, postoperative 6th month was 0.3±0.5 (2.0-0.0) log MAR and last visit was 0.3±0.5 (2.0-0.0) log MAR. The difference between preoperative BCVA and postoperative last visit BCVA was statistically significant. (p<0.001). Average recurrence period was 3.2±2.1 months. Inflammation activation was observed in 7 (%8) patients at postoperative first week visit. Postoperative uveitis recurrence was observed in 16 (%19) patients within 6 months. Posterior capsule opasification (PCO) developed in 29 (%35) patients postoperatively. Posterior capsule opasification (PCO) developed in 16 (%35) of 45 patients which had been applied hydrophobic acrylic IOL lens. Posterior capsule opasification (PCO) developed in 13 (%35) of 37 patients which had been applied with hydrophobic acrylic IOL lens. There was no significant difference between those two lenses in terms of PCO development (p>0.05). Conclusion: In conclusion, evalution of short and long term results of phacoemulsification + IOL implantation, this study suggested that treatment was effective and reliable in patients with secondary cataract due to uveitis.

Olguların; 23'ü (%40) kadın, 35'i (%60) erkekti. Yaş ortalaması 48,8±11,8 yıl (22-74 yıl) idi. Preoperatif ortalama 110 ± 61.9 ay (12-216 ay) takip edilirken, postoperatif takip süresi ortalama 39,1±22,7ay (6 ay- 96 ay) idi.
