Abstract

Aim: To evaluate the visual outcomes, peroperative and postoperative complications of phacoemulsification (PE) and posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation (PC IOL) in patients with Fuchs’ uveitis syndrome (FUS). Material and Method: Fifteen eyes of 15 (n=15) patients with FUS and cataract were enrolled in this retrospective study in Ministry of Health Istanbul Education and Research Hospital, Eye Clinic Uvea Unit. All patients underwent phacoemulsification cataract surgery and hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lens implantation. Visual acuities, intraocular inflammation and complications were evaluated postoperatively. Results: There were 9 males and 6 females in the study; the mean age was 35±11.5 years and mean follow-up time was 24 months. The preoperative best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was less than 0.5 in all eyes. Fifth week after surgery BCVA was 0.5 or better in all eyes and 1.0 in 10 eyes. The only intraoperative complication was bleeding in the peripheral iris but it did not affect the image. After the surgery, mild or moderate intraocular inflammation with decreasing intensity was observed in 13 patients. Postoperatively, anterior chamber fibrin reaction occurred in 2 patients (13.3%), intraocular pressure elevation was observed in 2 patients (13.3%) and vitreous inflammation developed in 1 patient (6.7%). There was 1 case of clintüically significant cystoid macular edema that resolved with medical treatment. Posterior capsule opacification developed in 3 patients (20 %) and neodymium:YAG laser capsulotomy was performed them. Conclusion: Phacoemulsification cataract surgery and intraocular lens implantation is a safe technique in patients with FUS and cataract. Postoperative inflammation is mild and visual results are quite good.
