Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the cognitive functions in patients with mature and nuclear cataract before and after cataract surgery. Material and Method: Thirty patients with mature cataract (Group 1) and 30 patients with variable grades of nuclear cataract (Group 2) were recruited in this study. Full ophthalmic examinations of patients were performed. Mini mental state examinations of patients were per- formed preoperatively and first postoperative month and compared between groups. Results: The mean age of 13 male (43.3%), 17 female (56.6%) patients in Group 1 was 70.9±11.8 years and the mean age of 17 male (56.6%), 13 female (43.3%) patients in Group 2 was 68.9 ± 12.8 years. The mean best corrected visual acuity was 0.005 ± 0.12 in Group 1 and 0.26 ±0.08 in Group 2, preoperatively (p 0,05). The mean mini mental state examinations of patients in group 1 was 16.73 ± 4.2 and 22.07±3.24 in group 2 (p 0.05). Conclusion: The mean mini mental state examination values were significantly lower in mature cataracts than in control group. This re- sult suggests that one of the reasons for delayed referral to the hospital of mature cataract patients may be related with the inability to realise visual impairment due to low cognitive function.

Operasyon öncesi yapılan mini mental test değerleri incelendiğinde grup 1’deki hastaların mini men- tal test ortalaması 16,73 ± 4,2 iken; grup 2’deki hastaların 22,07±3,24 idi (p 0,05). Sonuç: Mini mental test değerleri matür kataraktlı olgularda kontrol grubuna göre anlamlı olarak düşük bulunmuştur. Bu sonuç matür ka- taraktlı hastaların geç dönemde doktora başvurma nedenlerinden birisinin düşük bilişsel düzeyleri nedeni ile görme düzeyindeki düşüşü erken dönemde algılayamamalarının olabileceğini düşündürmüştür.
