Abstract

PURPOSE: To determine the prevalance and genetical inheritance pattern of strabismus in mono and dizygotic twins. Although the importance of family history is well-known, the inheritance pattern of strabismus is still unknown. METHODS: Strabismic twins that were seen in one years' time in outpatient clinic were included in this prospective study. Nine (18 subjects) out of 25 (50 subjects) pair of twins did not have strabismus. At least one of the siblings had strabismus in 16 twins (32 subjects). As control group, 32 subjects who had strabismus in one of the siblings (not twins) were included. RESULTS: Seventeen of the subjects were male and 15 were female with a mean age of 4.5 yrs (9 months-12 years). Eight of the twin pairs were monozygotic and 8 were dizygotic. When we compared the spherical refractive errors in subjects with and without strabismus, it was found to be higher in the deviating eyes but the difference was statistically insignificant (p>0.05). In the control group, 18 subjects were male, 14 were female, with a mean age of 5.2 years (1-14 yrs). CONCLUSION: Twins were studied frequently to investigate genetical properties of strabismus. In our study, hypermetropia was found to be higher in strabismic subjects indicating the importance of associated refractive error. In subjects with strabismus, twin pairs or the siblings should be examined for early diagnosis and treatment.
