Abstract

Purpose: To determine the ophthalmologic and sensory findings of anisometropic amblyopes in binocular conditions. Material and Methods: Thirty four anisometropic amblyopes and 30 normal subjects were included in the study. Uncorrected and best corrected visual acuity, the visual acuity difference between better eye and binocular visual acuity and fixation behavior were determined. The findings with Bagolini lenses were investigated with detailed questions. Result: Eighteen cases with amblyopia reported no difference between visual acuity of better eye and binocular condition. Twenty cases with amblyopia reported a light streak seen intermittently, which possibly means an intermittent suppression; and one case reported a total suppression of amblyopic eye. No cases of control group reported any disappearance of the light streak. Conclusion: Although anisometropic amblyopia patients appear to be a homogenous group, during daily conditions there are differences in sensory findings. Amblyopic eyes may be suppressed totally or partially, under binocular conditions. During making a decision about the refractive correction of an amblyopic eye, the physician should be sure that the amblyopic eye has no suppression.
