Abstract

Aim: Our aim was to differentiate the staphylococci strains isolated from the conjunctival swab samples of Behcet patients according to type and compare their antibiotic sensitivity with the normal population. Material and Method: A total of 30 patients diagnosed with Behcet's disease who were at the inactive stage and 30 patients with no systemic or ocular disease were included in the study. Swab samples were obtained from the inferior fornix of the right eye in all patients and inoculated into suitable media for bacteriological culture. The culture plates were evaluated after 18-24 hours of incubation. Bacterial growth as catalase-positive, gram-positive cocci was defined as Staphylococcus aureus and Coagulasenegative Staphylococci (CNS) using classical bacteriological methods. The strains were evaluated with an antibiogram using the disk-diffusion method according to the recommendations of the NCCLS (National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards) to determine the sensitivity of the staphylococci strains to the antibiotics penicillin, ciprofloxacin, fucidic acid, gentamycin, vancomycin, teicoplanin, clindamycin, chloramphenicol and co-trimoxazole. Results: There was growth in 27 of the 30 Behcet patients included in the study (90%). The growth was S. aureus in 7 of the 27 patients (23.3%) and CNS in 19 (63.3%). There was growth of bacteria other than S. aureus or CNS in one patient. There was growth in 18 of the 30 control group patients included in the study (90%). S. aureus grew in 2 of the 18 patients with growth in the control group (6.6%) while CNS grew in 14 (46.6%). Bacteria other than S. aureus or CNS grew in two patients in the control group. In the Behçet’s group, four of the 7 typed S. aureus strains (57.14%) and 6 of the 19 typed CNS strains (31.57%) were resistant to methicillin. In the control group, both of the 2 typed S. aureus strains (100%) were sensitive to methicillin while 2 of the 14 CNS strains (14.2%) were sensitive to methicillin. Conclusion: We believe that choosing antibiotics that are appropriate for the sensitivity profile of the strains in the treatment of external eye infections or postoperative endophthalmitis cases that may develop due to staphylococci in Behcet patients would ensure rapid effectiveness of the treatment.

On sekiz - yirmi dört saatlik inkübasyondan sonra kültür plakları değerlendirildi.
