Abstract

Although anterior segment ischemia is a more common complication of strabismus surgery, it can also be seen following vitreoretinal surgery. Predisposing factors include extraocular muscle surgery, haematological conditions such as sickle cell disease or polycythemia vera and scleral buckling. Anterior segment ischemia usually has its onset in the first postoperative days and it is characterized by vision loss, ocular pain, photophobia, corneal edema, anterior chamber reaction, hypotony and cataract formation. In this article, we discuss a 48 year-old man with anterior segment ischemia following vitreoretinal surgery combined with scleral buckling.
