Abstract

Aim: To determine the safety of prophylactic intracameral moxifloxacin 0.5% ophthalmic solution and cefuroxime in patients having cataract surgery. Material and Method: Preoperative and 1-month postoperative anterior chamber reaction, best corrected visual acuity, corneal thickness were assessed in 192 eyes that had cataract surgery with intracameral moxifloxacin and cefuroxime. 100 eyes received 0.1 mL intracameral moxifloxacin 0.5% ophthalmic solution containing 500 μg of moxifloxacin and 92 eyes received 0.1 mL 10.0 mg/ mL intrakamaral cefuroksime as the last step of phacoemulsification. Data vas recorded . A P value less than 0.05 was considered significant. Results: All 192 eyes completed the study. The mean age was 79.5 years ±10.12 (SD) (range 59 to 85 years). All eyes had a postoperative best corrected visual acuity of 20/30 or better. All eyes had trace to +2 cells and flare anterior chamber reaction only on the first day after surgery. Two eyes, who were received intracamaral cefuroxime, developed TASS. No eyes developed endophtalmitis. Between two groups the increase of 19.80 μm in postoperative korpachymetry 1 month after surgery was not statistically significant (P>.75). Conclusion: Intracameral moxifloxacin 0.5% mg/mL and cefuroxime can be used for prophlactic in cataract surgery patients. Intracameral moxifloxacin 0.5% mg/mL appeared to be nontoxic in terms of visual rehabilitation, anterior chamber reaction, pachymetry.
