Abstract

Objective: To compare the topographical values of the normal and keratoconic eyes of unilateral keratoconus patients with normal eyes of normal subjects. Material and Method: Central corneal thickness (CCT), the thinnest corneal thickness (t-CT), flat and steep keratometry (K1, K2) readings, topographic cylindrical value, maximum keratometry (K max) values, corneal front and back curvature symmetry index (Slf and Slb), corneal front and back keratoconus vertex values (Kvf and Kvb) of keratoconic eyes (group 1) and normal fellow eyes (group 2) of 26 patients with unilateral keratoconus were compared with the control group formed by 26 eyes of 26 healthy individuals. Result: All parameters in group 1 were statistically significantly higher than the ones in group 2 and the control group (p <0.001 for all values). When we compared the values in group 2 with the control group, there were no significant difference except the mean CCT and t-CT values (p>0.05 for all values). CCT and t-CT values were significantly lower when compared with the control group (p<0.001). Conclusion: Except corneal thicknes, topographical findings of normal eyes of patients with unilateral keratoconus were found normal in this study. Eventhough the topographical findings of these eyes are normal, the risk of corneal ectasia development is high with time or after having a refractive surgery. Therefore, ophthalmologists must know that ectasia may develop in a group of patients after refractive surgery despite the normal topographical findings.
