Abstract

AIMS: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of long-term topical anti- glaucoma medications on the tear film and cytology of conjunctiva. METHODS: Impression cytology, Schirmer I and tear film break up time (BUT) tests were performed to 54 eyes of 32 patients who were taking medical treatment (timolol, pilocarpine, timolol + pilocarpine) for glaucoma at least one year. impression-acquired biopsy specimens were evaluated according to epithelial cell morphology and goblet cell density. Results were compared with control group's. RESULTS: There were no statistically significant differences between control and pilocarpine groups according to Schirmer I and BUT tests, and the grade of squamous metaplasia. But these tests and surface changes of conjunctiva were significantly different from control group in timolol and combined (timolol and pilocarpine) groups. CONCLUSION: The patients receiving long-term topical treatment with pilocarpine have less adverse effects to precorneal tear film and ocular surface than the patients receiving timolol and its combination with pilocarpine for glaucoma.
