Abstract

PURPOSE: To evaluate ocular complications and conjunctival surface epithelial morphology In patients with rheumatoid arthritis. METHODS: Forty-two patients with rheumatoid arthritis were evaluated. Schirmer I, tearfilm break-up time (BUT) tests and impression cytology were performed to 44 eyes of 22 patients and 32 eyes of 16 control cases. Nineteen patients had fundus floressein angiography. RESULTS: Schirmer l and BUT were significantly lower in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The rates of squamous metaplasia were 45.45% in patient group and 6.25% in control group. There was a correlation between mean illness duration and the most common ocular complication, keratoconjunctivitis sicca (20.45%). In fundus fluoressein angiography capillary leakage was observed in 15.7% of patients. CONCLUSION: To detect ocular pathologies earlier, periodic controls of patients with rheumatoid arthritis may be benefical.
