Abstract

PURPOSE: Self-sealing corneal incisions are widely used by numerous cataract surgeons for phacoemulsification and implantation of foldable intraocular lenses (IOLs). In this study, the results of a new blade for phacoemulsification surgery which performs a trapezoidal corneal valve incision and eliminates the need for separate knives during the surgery was evaluated. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two lines on a 5.1mm. phaco knife was marked by neodymium-YAG laser applications, which indicated 3.0mm. and 4.0mm. internal incision width and the trapezoidal corneal valve incision was performed with this knife. The phacoemulsification was performed through the incision formed by advancing the blade until the 3.0mm line, and IOL implantation was performed through the incision formed by advancing the blade until 4.0mm line, respectively. RESULTS: No intraoperative or postoperative complication was seen in 18 eyes of 18 patients operated on by phacoemulsification through the trapezoidal corneal valve incision followed by IOL implantation. The average surgically induced astigmatism calculated from the keratometry readings at one month was 1.65 +/- 0.85D. CONCLUSION: We think that the trapezoidal corneal valve incision technique in the phacoemulsification procedure is reproducible, safe and useful method.
