Abstract

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of carteolol, a beta-blocker with intrinsic symphathomimetic activity, on retrobulbar hemodynamics in primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and normal tension glaucoma (NTG) cases. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifteen cases with POAG and 12 NTG cases were included in this study. Before treatment and after one-month topical 2% carteolol hydrochloride therapy, ocular blood flow was evaluated by color Doppler imaging (CDI) technique. Rezistivity indices (RI) were measured in ophthalmic artery (OA), central retinal artery (CRA) and temporal short posterior ciliary arteries (SPCA). Wilcoxon signed ranks test was used for statistical analysis, significance was set of p<0.05. RESULTS: The intraocular pressure decreased significantly in POAG and NTG cases (p<0.05). Systolic, diastolic blood pressures and pulse remained unchanged (p>0.05). Significant RI decrease in SPCA of POAG cases (p=0.035), and in both CRA (p=0.037) and SPCA (p=0.041) of NTG cases were detected following topical carteolol therapy. CONCLUSION: Topical carteolol therapy decreases intraocular pressures in POAG and NTG cases in a safe and effective ocular profile and acts favourably on retrobulbar circulation.
