Abstract

PURPOSE: In this study, we aimed to compare the effects of topical carteolol and metipranolol on serum lipid profile. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Total 24 patients, 19 female and 5 male (mean age of 58,3) with the diagnosis of glaucoma, not using any antiglaucomatous drug, participated in this study. Basal serum trigliceride, total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, VLDL cholesterol levels were measured in the 12 hours fasting venous blood. 11 patients used topical %2 carteolol and 13 patient used %0,3 metipranolol one drop bilaterally twice daily. After 21 days serum lipid fraction measurements were repeated and the effects of two drugs on serum lipid profiles were compared statistically. RESULTS: After 21 days, in the group using carteolol serum HDL, LDL cholesterol and other lipid fractions increased; in the group using metipranolol serum HDL cholesterol level decreased and other lipid fractions increased. Both drugs increased total cholesterol/HDL cholesterol ratio, but these changes were statistically insignificiant (Wilcoxon p>0,05) .There was no statistically significiant differential drug effect on the lipid fractions between two treatment groups(Mann Whitney-U p>0,05). CONCLUSIONS: It is concluded that neither carteolol nor metipranolol had statistically significiant effect on serum lipid profiles. As the glacoumatous patients using these drugs are usually old and have cardivascular and respiratory system disorders, their serum lipid levels should be measured within certain intervals and using the topical drugs in minimal concentrations may be beneficial.
