Abstract

PURPOSE: : To assess the effectiveness of the flash visual evoked potentials (VEPs) as a potential predictor of post surgical visual acuity of 0.6 or better in cataract patients who underwent phacoemulsification surgery. MATERIAL AND METHOD: This study included 45 patients (45 eyes) with cataract. Control group consisted of 34 subjects (61 eyes). Preoperatively, complete ophthalmic examination and the flash VEPs were performed. The stimulus frequencies were 2, 5, and 10 Hz. Two months postoperatively, visual acuity was measured. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis were used to evaluate the performance of the flash VEP to predict visual acuity. RESULTS: Postoperative visual acuity was greater than 0.5 in 36 patients (80%). For 2 Hz, 5 Hz, and 10 Hz, there were no statistically significant differences between area under curve (AUC) of p100 latency and True Area (=0.50) (respectively p=0.96, p=0.31, p=0.81). There were no statistically significant differences between AUC of amplitudes and True Area (0.50) (respectively p=0.37, p=0.91, p=0.11). There was a moderate agreement between P100 latency values for 2 Hz and 5 Hz (kappa: 0.643, p<0.001). CONCLUSION: The flash VEP recordings for 2, 5, and 10 Hz were insufficient to predict postoperative visual acuity. None of the flash stimuli was not superior to each other to estimate postoperative visual acuity.

BULGULAR: Otuzaltı hastada (%80) postoperatif görme keskinliği 0.5'in üzerindeydi.
