Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the rate of malignancy and the histopathological distribution of clinically presumed benign eyelid tumors. Material and Methods: During January 1994 and January 2001, 151 cases who underwent histopathological evaluation for the diagnosis of benign eyelid tumors were retrospectively evaluated. Results: In the study cohort, 87 (%57.6) cases were male and 64 (%42.4) cases were female. The mean age was 56.7±15.4 years (range: 2 months-80 years). The histopathological evaluation of the lesions demonstrated benign tumors of the epidermis in 41 cases (27.2%), benign cystic tumors in 27 cases (17.9%), benign inflammatory tumors in 20 cases (13.2%), benign vascular tumors in 16 cases (10.6%), premalignant tumors of the epidermis in 12 cases (7.9%), benign melanocytic tumors in 10 cases (6.6%), malign eyelid tumors in 6 cases (4.0%), benign neural tumors in 6 cases (4.0%), benign histiocytic, myxoid and fibrous tumors in 6 cases (4.0%), benign hair follicule tumors in 4 cases (2.6%), and benign sweat gland tumors in 3 cases (2.0%). Conclusions: Malignant tumors should be in the differential diagnosis of benign eyelid lesions. Although a detailed clinical examination has evident contribution to the diagnosis, histopathological evaluation is the golden standard for differentiation of benign and malignant eyelid lesions.

Özet

Amaç: Klinik muayenede benign kapak tümörü olarak değerlendirilen lezyonların histopatolojik dağılımlarının irdelenmesi ve malignite saptanma oranının araştırılmasıdır. Gereç ve Yöntem: Ocak 1994-Ocak 2001 yılları arasında klinik muayene bulguları doğrultusunda benign kapak tümörü ön tanısı konulan ve eksizyon sonrası histopatolojik değerlendirme yapılan 151 olgu retrospektif olarak incelendi. Bulgular: Olguların 87'si erkek (%57.6), 64'ü kadın (%42.4) olup, yaş ortalamaları 56.7±15.4 yıl (dağılım: 2 ay-80 yıl) idi. Lezyonların histopatolojik değerlendirilmesinde, 41 olguda (%27.2) benign epidermal tümörler, 27 olguda (%17.9) benign kistik tümörler, 20 olguda (%13.2) benign inflamatuar tümörler, 16 olguda (%10.6) benign vasküler tümörler, 12 olguda (%7.9) epidermal premalign lezyonlar, 10 olguda (%6.6) benign melanositik tümörler, 6 olguda (%4.0) malign kapak tümörü, 6 olguda (%4.0) benign nöral tümörler, 6 olguda (%4.0) benign histiyositik, mikzoid ve fibröz tümörler, 4 olguda (%2.6) benign kıl follikülü tümörleri, 3 olguda ise (%2.0) benign ter bezi tümörleri tespit edildi. Sonuç: Klinik olarak benign görünümlü kapak lezyonlarının ayırıcı tanısında malign tümörleri her zaman akılda tutulmalıdır. Benign ve malign kapak lezyonlarının ayırıcı tanısında detaylı klinik muayenenin önemli yeri olmakla birlikte histopatolojik değerlendirme altın standarttır.
