Abstract

Purpose: To compare the efficacies of 1.25% povidone iodine and lomefloxacin (3 mg/ml) (Okacin 0.3%, Novaritis Ophthalmics) for the treatment of acute bacterial conjunctivitis. Material and Methods: Patients were diagnosed according to a predefined protocol, and they were randomized to receive povidon iodine or lomefloxacin. Results: There were 25 patients in the lomefloxacin group, and 23 patients in the povidone group. Both of the drugs were equally effective at eliminating the signs and symptoms at the first and second controls (p>0.05 and p>0.05 respectively). Self-reported and the physician reported relief were equal among groups (p>0.05 and p>0.05 respectively). Conclusion: Povidone-iodine 1.25% is effective as lomefloxacin 0.3% in the treatment of acute bacterial conjunctivitis.
