Abstract

Aim: To compare the surgical outcomes of different surgical prosedures in exotropia. Retrospective comparative clinical study. Material andMetod: Five hundred and eight exotropia patients that were evaluated in our clinic between 2000-2007 were included. Results: Three hundred and eighty-nine (76.57%) patients were underwent surgical prosedure after 29.28 months (6-168) mean follow-up. The mean age of the patients in this study was 15.9 years (1-53). There were 216 females (55.5%) and 173 males (44.5%). Eighty-two patients (21.07%) underwent bilateral lateral rectus recession, 274 patients (70.4%) underwent unilateral recession resection prosedure and thirty-three patients (8.5%) underwent other surgical prosedures. At the same time, oblique surgery was performed in 99 patients (25.44%). At the final follow-up examination, the success rate was 74.5% in unilateral recession/ resection group and 59.5% in the bilateral lateral rectus recession group. Twenty-nine patients (7.5%) underwent reoperation for undercorrection after 27.9 months later from first surgery. Conclusion: Unilateral recession/resection surgery, may be used effectively in different types of exotropia. Early postoperative results may not be good predictive sign in determining the success rates of the operation and follow-up time is important.
