Abstract

Aim: To evaluate the indications and graft survival rates of bilateral penetrating keratoplasties (PK) performed in Ankara Training and Research Hospital Ophthalmology Department. Material and Method: This analysis covered 40 patients (23 males, 17 females) who underwent PK in both eyes. Records of all patients were retrospectively reviewed. The graft survival rates were calculated by using Kaplan Meier’s method for the first and second eyes. Results: The mean age at the time of the surgery was 31.24±19.95 years (range 8-63 years) in the first eyes and 33,2±17,5 years (range 10-64 years) in the second eyes. Mean follow- up time was 54,4±27,6 months (range 20-115 months) after surgery in the first eyes and 42,9±25,9 months (range 12-100 months) after surgery in the second eye. Indications for PK were keratokonus in 23 patients (57.5%), corneal dystrophy in 13 patients (32%), corneal scar in 3 patients (5%), and ocular surface disorders in 1 patient (2.5%). Graft rejection was seen in three of the first eyes (7.5%) and two of the second eyes (5%) . Two of the graft rejections in the first eye occurred after transplantation in the second eye. Two years graft survival rates were not significantly different in the initial and second eyes (p>0.05). The BCVA was equal and over the 6/36 in the 26 first eyes (64%) and in the 27 second eyes (65%). There was no statistically significant difference between the initial and second eyes (p>0.05). Conclusion: Our data indicated that PK in the second eyes does not increase the risk of graft rejection in either eye.
