Abstract

Aim: To evaluate the association of visual acuity (VA) and refractive error (RE) with long term intraocular pressure (IOP) control in patients with primary congenital glaucoma (PCG). Material and Methods: The medical records of 13 patients (24 eyes) with the diagnosis of PCG were retrospectively studied. The age at diagnosis, the age at surgical intervention, number of procedures performed, preoperative and postoperative IOP levels, VA in logMAR and RE were determined for each patient. Mann Whitney U test, chi-square test and Spearman’s correalation test were used for statistical comparisons. Results: The duration of follow-up ranged between 3.3 to 13.8 years (8.9±3.7 years [mean±SD]). Myopia was present in 90.5% of eyes. VA of >20/40 was obtained in 33.3% of eyes. There was an inverse correlation between VA and RE. (r=-0.700, p<0.001). The VA in logMAR of eyes that required >1 operation was significantly lower than those that required a single operation ((-1.05±0.63, -0.44±0.66, p=0.05). The IOP of all eyes whose VA were > 20/40 at the final visit was <21mmHg. There was no association between the age at diagnosis, age of initial surgery and preoperative IOP level with either the VA or RE. (p>0.05). The mean RE of eyes whose final IOP level was >21mmHg was significantly higher than the mean RE of eyes whose final IOP level was <21mmHg. (5.08±3.20D, 1.86±1.99D, p=0.044). Conclusion: The VA and RE of patients with PCG appear to be associated with long-term IOP control.
