Abstract

Purpose: To compare the results of refraction measurement with photorefractometer and autorefractometer with or without cycloplegia in children. Material and Methods: In this study, we assess refractive status of 90 eyes of 45 healthy children (20 female, 25 male). The values of refraction measurement acquired by photorefraction using Plusoptix CR03 device were compared with those non-cycloplegic and cycloplegic refraction obtained by autorefractometer. Refraction measurements were evaluated according to spherical equivalent refraction (SE), cylindrical power (CP) and weighted axis deviation (DA). Results: Mean age of children was 8.21±2.81 years (range 3-14 years). Average SE and CP were -0.03±1.83 diopter (D) and -0.64±0.59 D with photorefraction, were -0.34±1.62 D and -0.64±0.72 D with non-cycloplegic autorefraction and were 0.37±2.02 D and -0.63±0.73 D with cycloplegic autorefraction. Difference of SE and difference of CP was 0.31±0.66 D (p<0.05) and 0.003±0.27 D (p>0.05) between photorefraction and non cycloplegic autorefraction, -0.40±0.98 D (p<0.05) and 0.003±0.30 D (p>0.05) between photorefraction and cycloplegic autorefraction, and -0.71±0.73 D (p<0.05) and 0.005±0.21 D (p>0.05) between non-cycloplegic and cycloplegic autorefraction. Conclusions: Refractions measured by photorefraction were comparable to those obtained by non-cycloplegic and cycloplegic autorefraction. However, cycloplegic examination is still gold standard in childhood.
