Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of bimatoprost compared to apraclonidine the prevention of the intraocular pressure (IOP) elevation after Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy. Material and Methods: In a double masked prospective clinical study, 60 eyes from 60 patients were randomly assigned to receive either bimatoprost 0.03% or apraclonidine 0.5% one hour before Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy. IOP was measured by a masked observer, using Goldmann applanation tonometry before 1 hour and 30 minutes,1 hour, 2 hour, 4 hour, 1 day and 1 week after the laser. Results: There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups regarding the IOP levels 30 minutes,1 hour before the procedure, and 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours, 1 day and 1 week after the laser treatment (p values, respectively : 0.582, 0.446, 0.839, 0.365, 0.698 and 0.739 ). Conclusion: This study support that bimatoprost is a safe and effective as apraclonidine in the prevention of the IOP elevation after Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy.
