Abstract

Aim: To compare result of conventional detachment surgery , vitreoretinal surgery and combined approach of scleral buckle with pars plana vitrectomy in patients with rhegmatogeneus retinal detachment which is the most common type of all retinal detachments. Material and Method: This study included 109 eyes of 109 patients that undergone surgery for rhegmatogeneous retinal detachment between January 2005- May 2009. The patients were evaluated for type of surgery , visual acuity, anatomical success and complications. Results: In group 1.53 (48.6%) patients underwent convantional surgery, 25 (22.9%) patients had vitreoretinal surgery in Group 2 and in Group 3, 31 (28.4%) patients underwent combined procedure of conventional detachment surgery with vitreoretinal surgery. 42 (79.2%) cases in Group 1.20 (80%) cases in Group 2 and 25 (80.7%) cases in Group 3, anatomically successful results were determined. Recurrent retinal detachment was observed in 9 (16.9%) patients in Group 1.5 (20%) patients in Group 2 and 5 (16.1%) patienst in Group 3 during the follow up period. Conclusion: There was no statistically significant difference between three groups on the postoperative success in rhegmatogeneus retinal detachment in terms of recurrent retinal detachments.
