Abstract

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the results of symmetric and asymmetric surgical treatment performed in cases under follow up with intermittant exotropia and the affecting factors. Material and Method: Ninety-three patients with intermittent exotropia who had at least one year of follow-up were enrolled into study, retrospectively. Symmetrical surgery (lateral rectus recession in both eyes) was performed in 47 cases and asymmetrical surgery (lateral rectus recession and medial rectus resection in non-dominant eye) in 46 cases. All patients underwent post-operative examinations at 1st day, 1st month, 6th month and 1st year by deviation at distance and at 1st day, 1st month, 6th month deviation at near were evaluated. Postoperative deviations of <10 PD was regarded as successful outcome. Results: Ninety-three patients were evaluated after surgery, and there was no statistically significant difference between symmetrical and asymmetrical surgeries in the evaluation of 1st day (p=0.442), 1st month (p=0.157), 6th months (p=0.056) concerning the deviation at distance and 1st day (p=0.159), 1st month (p=0.097) concerning the deviation at near. Asymmetrical surgery results were found to be more successful in the evaluation of deviation at near in the postoperative 6th month (p =0.030) and both near and distance deviation in postoperative 1st year (p=0.005). Conclusion: Concerning the treatment of different intermittent exotropia, it seems that asymmetric surgical methods are more successful in contrast to symmetrical surgical methods.
