Abstract

Aim: Studying concomitant systemic diseases and indispensable continuous use of systemic medications in patients diagnosed with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) in our clinic. Material and Method: We examined systemic diseases and systemic medications of 323 (207 female and 116 male) patients diagnosed with POAG in our Glaucoma Unit between September 2006 and July 2010. Results: Among women, the concomitant disease was hypertension in 42.51%, whereas it was diabetes mellitus (DM) in 22.22%, hyperlipidemia in 15.94%, psychiatric disorders in 14.97%, and hypothyroidism in 13.04%. Among men, the concomitant disease was hypertension in 36.24%, DM in 24.13%, hyperlipidemia in 19.82%, coronary artery disease in 12.06%, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in 9.48%. Among female patients, 65.18% were on antihypertensive, 34.04% were on antidiabetic, 17.03% were on antipsychotic, 14.81% were on levothyroxine, and 10.37% were on statin drugs. Among men, 59.42% were on antihypertensive, 40.57% were on antidiabetic, 20.28% were on nitrate, and 17.39% were on statin drugs. Conclusion: In POAG patients, we observed many concomitant systemic diseases. The number of patients receiving one or more systemic drugs was high. While selecting the drugs, considering such clinical characteristics and working cooperatively with other related clinics are important for monitoring disease progression.

Özet

Amaç: Kliniğimizde yeni tanı konulmuş primer açık açılı glokom (PAAG) hastalarının sistemik hastalıkları ve sürekli kullandıkları oldukları sistemik ilaçlarını incelemek. Gereç ve Yöntem: Eylül 2006 - Temmuz 2010 tarihleri arasında glokom bölümümüzde yeni tanı konulmuş 323 (207 kadın,116 erkek) PAAG hastasının sistemik hastalıkları ve kullandıkları sistemik ilaçlar incelendi. Bulgular: Kadınlarda %42,51 hipertansiyon, %22,22 diabetes mellitus (DM), %15,94 hiperlipidemi, %14,97 psikiyatrik bozukluklar, %13,04 hipotiroidi eşlik etmekteydi. Erkeklerde ise %36,24 hipertansiyon, %24,13 DM, %19,82 hiperlipidemi, %12,06 koroner arter hastalığı, %9,48 kronik obstrüktif akciğer hastalığı bulunmaktaydı. Kadın hastaların %65,18’i antihipertansif, %34,04’ü antidiabetik, %17,03’ü antipsikotik, %14,81’i levotroksin, %10,37’si statin kullanıyordu. Erkek hastaların %59,42’si antihipertansif, %40,57’si antidiyabetik, %20,28’i nitrat, %17,39’u statin kullanıyordu.
