Abstract

Aim: To analyze the prevalence of astigmatism in potential soft contact lens wearers. Material and Method: A database of 365 spectacle prescriptions was used to calculate the prevalence of astigmatism. The database comprising those patients with at least 0.75 diopter (D) of astigmatism in at least one eye were evaluated. Results: In this study 365 spectacle prescriptions were evaluated. The mean age was 43.08±16.70 (range: 7 to 70 ) years and there were 205 female (56.1%), 160 (43.8%) male. The prevalence of patients showing astigmatism of 0.75 D or greater in at least one eye was %32.3 and %20.8 in both eyes. The proportion of eyes showing astigmatism greater than or equal to 0.75, 1.00, 1.25, 1.50, 1.75 and 2.00 D was %32.3, %20.8, %15.06, %10.1, %8.4, %5.2 . The prevalence of astigmatism of 0.75 D or greater in at least one eye was higher in myopes compared with hyperopes (%34.5 and %25.2). The prevalence of with-the-rule astigmatism and against-the-rule astigmatism were similar (%37.2 and 38.9). Conclusion: We observed that approximately one third of potential contact lens wearers presented with astigmatism of 0.75 D or greater in at least one eye.
