Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the changes in central corneal thickness in subjects receiving combined oral contraceptives. Material and Method: In this prospective study, randomised 27 eyes of 27 childbearing age women who want to receive combined oral contraceptives for contraception were included. Initiating drug use at the 1st day of menstrual cycle, the patients continued the use of combined oral contraceptives as 21-day drug use and 7-day break, all 28-day periods. Central corneal thickness measurements were taken before the initiation of combined oral contraceptives and at the first day of the periods of the first and third months. The changes in central corneal thickness after the initiation of combined oral contraceptives were compared with baseline values. Results: The mean age was 25.4±6.7 (19-33) years-old. While the mean central corneal thickness was 548.4±32.3µm before the initiation of combined oral contraceptives, it was 555.8±28.1µm (p=0.052) at the first month, 563.8±31.6µm (p=0.012) at the third month after the initiation of combined oral contraceptives. Conclusion: In our study, an increase in central corneal thickness in women receiving combined oral contraceptive for contraception was observed. Therefore, combined oral contraceptive use should be questioned especially in cases whom changes in central corneal thickness are important such as corneal refractive surgery candidates or intraocular pressure measurements.

Santral kornea kalınlığı kombine oral kontraseptif kullanmaya başlamadanönce ortalama 548,4±32,3 iken kombine oral kontraseptif kullanmaya başladıktan sonraki 1. ayda 555,8±28,1µm (p=0,052), 3. ayda ise563,8±31,6 µm (p=0,012) idi.
