Abstract

Objective: To investigate choroidal thickness measurement and the effect of choroidal thickness on retinal nerve fiber layer and macula in rheumatoid artritis patients. Material and Method: We compared 96 rheumatoid arthritis patients to control group consisting of 88 normal healthy volunteers. The con- trol group was randomly selected. Rheumatoid arthritis disease activity; was assessed by patient activity score 28 (DAS 28). Rheumatoid arthri- tis patients were divided into two subgroups with low and high activity scores according to the DAS 28 score. DAS28 score between 2.6-3.2 was accepted as lower, DAS 28 score higher than 5.1 was considered as high disease activity. Two groups were compared in terms of rheumatoid arthritis patients and control group, retinal nerve fiber layer, macula and subfoveal-peripapillary choroidal thickness. Result: The levels of rheumatoid factor, C-reactive protein and anti-cyclic citrated peptide were higher in the high DAS group (p 0.05). Conclusion: To our knowledge in this study, choroidal thinning can be observed in rheumatoid arthritis. The observation of this examina- tion in all part of choroid suggests that the underlying cause may be vasculitis. The fact that retinal nerve fiber layer and macular thickness are unaffected indicates that the change in choroid is not reflected in retina.
