Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the demographic and clinical features of severe mechanical eye injury cases and the associated factors related to low visual acuity. Material and Method: 792 injured eyes of 763 patients were examined. Demographic and Clinical properties of the cases were analyzed. The factors associated with poor visual outcome in 556 eyes of 535 cases in whom vision could be recorded accurately and admitted to hospital within 30 days of injury were determined. Single and multivariate logistic regression analysis were performed. Results: The age of the patients varied between 2 months to 86 years. Most common type of injury was open globe injury that occurred in 64,3% of eyes. At admission, only 21,9 % of the eyes had vision of 0,1 or better. At the end of follow up, 49,1% of the eyes displayed visual acuity of 0,1 or better. Open globe injury was 3,7 times more likely to result in poor visual outcome (p<0,0001). Posterior segment involvement, scleral laceration and first VA<0,l were associated with poor visual outcome in eyes with open globe injury( p<0,0001, p=0,015 and p<0,001). In closed globe injuries, application to hospital later than 24 hours (p<0,004) was found to be another significant factor of poor visual outcome. Conclusion: In the majority of the severely injured eyes, functional levels of visual acuity could be reached with appropriate surgical and med- ical interventions. Ocular injury is a major problem for occupational safety and public health. Functional losses can be prevented if certain pre- cautions are taken.
