Abstract

Objective: Determining etiological factors of acute acquired third nerve palsy and evaluating their relationship with spontaneous recovery. Material and Method: Records of the patients diagnosed with acquired third cranial nerve palsy in our hospital between 2001 and 2016 were reviewed. Cases who recovered spontaneously without surgical procedure were included in this study. Age, sex, etiology and time interval between the beginning of the symptoms and application to hospital were noted. The relationship between the etiologies and the rate of sponta- neous recovery were evaluated. Results: Between 2001 and 2016, 66 cases (22 female, 44 male) were included in this study who were diagnosed with acquired third nerve palsy and applied to our hospital in less than 30 days from the beginning of their symptoms. Mean age of the cases was 55,87±15,88 years. Fifty six (84.8%) of these cases had spontaneous recovery. As etiological factors, 44 (66.7%) had microvascular pathologies, 10 (15.1%) had trauma, 5 (7.6%) had cerebrovascular pathologies and 2 (3%) had intracranial lesion. 5 cases were determined as idiopathic. Spontaneous recovery was observed in 90,9% cases with microvascular pathologies, 50% in cases with intracranial mass. Conclusion: The most common etiology of acquired third nerve palsy had been determined to be microvascular pathologies and highest ratio of spontaneous recovery was observed in idiopathic cases. Regardless of division, cases with partial third nerve palsy had higher ratio of spon- taneous recovery than complete third nerve palsy.
