Abstract

Objective: To compare the paraoxonase and arylesterase activities of paraoxonase enzyme between retinal vein occlusion and control groups. Material and Method: Thirtyeight retinal vein occlusion patients and age-gender matched 38 control subjects were included in the study. The blood samples were obtained from all of the participants and serum was separated by centrifuge. Spectrophotometric paraoxonase and arylesterase activities of paraoxonase enzyme were measured by commercially available kits. The enzyme activities were compared between reti- nal vein occlusion and control groups statistically. Results: There wasn’t any statistical difference between groups with respect to age, gender and body mass index. Paraoxonase and arylesterase activities were not statistically different between the groups (p=0.543 and p=0.477, respectively). Significant correlations were found between paraoxonase and arylesterase activities in both group (in RVO group p=0.001, r=0.507 and in control group p<0.001, r=0.543). Conclusion: In this study, there were not any significant differences between the retinal vein occlusion and the control groups in terms of paraoxonase and arylesterase activities
