Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the efficiency and safety of the use of intraocular heavy silicone oil tamponade in cases with complicated inferior retinal detachment. Material and Method: The medical records of 13 patients who underwent surgical treatment and intraocular heavy silicone oil tamponade for complicated inferior retinal detachment were retrospectively reviewed. The data of the patients preoperatively, postoperatively at month 1, month 3 and at the final visits were recorded. The best corrected visual acuity levels, intraocular pressure levels, anatomical and functional success rates and complications associated with the use of heavy silicone oil were evaluated. Results: Significant visual gain was detected in 10 patients (76.92%). Anatomical success rate was 76.92% after initial surgeries and 92.31% after secondary surgeries (due to recurrent retinal detachments). There was a statistically significant increase in mean best corrected visual acuity when comparing initial best corrected visual acuity with postoperative visits (Friedman test p=0.001). A significant increase (p =0.005) in intraocular pressure values was determined in the comparison of preoperative and postoperative 1 st month visits and also a signif- icant decrease those in the comparison of postoperative 1 st month and final visits (p=0.05, One-way Anova with repeated measures). The mean duration of heavy silicone oil endotamponade was 5.07±3.77 months (range: 1-12 months). We have detected prolonged intraocular inflam- mation in 5 patients (38.46%), subclinical heavy silicone oil emulsification in 5 patients (38.46%), cataract in 2 patients, and hypotonia in 3 patients (23.07%). Conclusion: Successful anatomic and functional outcomes can be achieved with heavy silicone oil endotamponade in complicated inferior quadrant retinal detachment cases. In addition, patients should be followed carefully in terms of complications related to the use of heavy sil- icone oil in the postoperative period.
