Abstract

Objective: To compare dry eye test results in patients with unilateral pterygium with healthy eyes of the same patient. Material and Method: Thirty-nine patients with unilateral pterygium were included in the study. Patients were evaluated with Schirmer 1 test, tear break-up time and corneal fluorescein staining on biomicroscopy. The measured values obtained from the pterygium eyes were com- pared with those obtained from the healthy eyes of the same patients (control group). The patients who had previously known dry eye disease or underwent surgery for pterygium were not included in the study. Results: Sixteen patients were male (41%) and 23 (59%) were female. The mean age was 52.4 (21-82 years) years. The Schirmer 1 test was significantly lower in eyes with pterygium than in healthy eyes (10.3 vs 14.5 mm, p <0.05). The tear break-up time was significantly lower in eyes with pterygium than in healthy eyes (6.8 vs 10.9 s, p <0.05). Corneal fluorescein staining was significantly higher in eyes with pterygium (77% vs 10% p <0.05). Conclusions: Dry eye test results are more distorted in eyes with pterygium compared to healty eyes in patients with unilateral pterygium. This finding supports the relationship between pterygium and dry eye.
