Abstract

Objective: To compare the levels of elabela, apelin-13 and nitric oxide in aqueous humor and simultaneous venous blood serum in between diabetic patients with cataract and non-diabetic cataract patients. Material and Method: The study was performed on 44 patients, including 22 patients who had diabetes mellitus and cataract in a single eye (DM+C) (n-22) and 22 patients without diabetes mellitus and had cataract at a single eye (C) (n=22), in whom phacoemulsification cataract surgery was performed. Elabela, apelin and nitric oxide levels in serum and humor aqueous were measured by ELISA. Results: Only the nitric oxide level among these parameters measured in both humor aqueous and serum, was significantly higher in human aqueous of patient group with both diabetes and cataract (p<0.05). No statistically significant difference was found between the other parameters. Conclusion: In patients with diabetes mellitus, nitric oxide levels were found to be high in both aqueous humor and serum.
