Abstract

The aim of this paper is to examine how the museums that had to be closed due to the COVID-19 epidemic deal with this global crisis by putting digital and virtual applications into effect, through the intersection of art-museums-communication. The study focuses on the online activities of public and private museums in Istanbul, via audience and researcher oriented events, current exhibitions, and other organizations within the museum. In the light of parameters such as the digitization of art, the media used, the distinction between the public and private sector, the digitalization ability of art museums in moving their capacity to the virtual environment as well as their success in crisis management are emphasized. The research was conducted with the use of digital channels, social media, and through an online survey. The official quarantine period was taken as the time interval. By evaluating the qualitative and quantitative results, the structure of museums’ access to their audience during the epidemic was attempted to be determined. As a result of the research, it was revealed that public museums could not deliver their collections to the audience sufficiently in the digital environment, while the majority of private museums increased the number of their followers during the pandemic. The global epidemic has brought up the importance of crisis management in the fields of art, museums, and communication -as it is in many fields- and showed that the internet and social media outperform the classical communication tools
