Abstract

With the beginning of Hellenistic Period, a marked rise in the festivals organized by sanctuaries occurred, particularly in Asia Minor. Fairs set up on during such festivals enabled participants both to meet their daily needs and to do shopping in larger scale. Coins were struck by sanctuaries in order to provide use of a single instrument of payment. Such Panegyris coins bear the name of the related deity in the genitive and they both made transactions easier and the let the organizer profit due to the exchange rate. In this study, panegyris coins struck in Tralleis for the festivals organized for Zeus Larasios and Zeus Larasios Eumenes are introduced.
