Abstract

Objective: In Turkey, there is no analysis of patients who died in mental hospitals. The aim of the study is to describe some sociodemographic and clinic properties of patients who died during inpatient treatment at the Samsun Mental Hospital. Method: Identities of patients were determined from MERNIS form, which were filled for all deaths in hospital. Data were obtained from hospital records of patients who died between January 2000- December 2006. Results: During this period, fifty five deaths (33 males; 22 females) were recorded in psychiatry services. Mean age was 50.4±14.57 years (min 20 year- max 91 year). It was established that 42.6% of the deaths occurred on saturdays and sundays, 40.7% between 00:00-08:00 hours, within five days of hospitalization and four patient have committed suicide. In the files of 29 patient (61.2%), there were no records about any medical disease other than psychiatric disease. Discussion: During inpatient treatment, the number of deaths in Samsun Mental Hospital, was less than those in some other countries. As concordant to literature, more deaths were recorded during out of working hours, initials days of hospitalization and in addition, hanging was the most common suicide method.
