Abstract

A review of measures used in diagnosis and severity rating of dementia is presented in this paper. A diagnosis of dementia could be reached by a thorough investigation of cognitive performance, behavioral signs and functional changes via examining the patient and interviewing the caregiver. Several cognitivescreening tests, behavioral, functional, motor and rating scales, some of which are adapted to Turkish language and have norms available on the Turkish geriatric population will be described; the method to approach mental examination in patients presenting with cognitive complaints will be briefly outlined.
